Reformation Recommendation
For May 14, 2011 Presentation to District Council
Rationale for Reformation of District 14
District 14 is comprised of members from the entire state of Georgia. Club #289, chartered in December 1944 as the Henry W. Grady Club, but known today as the Alpha Toastmasters Club, was the first Toastmasters club in Georgia. Other clubs chartered in the 40's are Augusta #326 (July, 1945) and Savannah #705 (July, 1949). John Lister became the editor of the first district newsletter in 1966. The first Toastmaster of the Year award was presented in 1969 to P. Greg McCarthy, a member of the Georgia-Carolina Club, #2523. The District had three Divisions (Northern, Southern and Eastern). In the 1968-1969 District year, the first Communication award for a non-Toastmaster was presented to Dr. Noah Langdale, President of Georgia State University in Atlanta. Since then the district has grown to become one of the largest 5 districts in the world, both in terms of numbers of clubs as well as numbers of members. Though District 14 is large, its growth rate is not as robust as it is believed it can be. The size of the district has reached the point that a reformation is warranted due to a number of factors. The key issue for success of any district is the effectiveness of a district in servicing its clubs. Factors driving this recommendation for reformation focus on that servicing ability.
